The drift of juicy   Austria   1989

Ursula PÜRRER

The Drift of Juicy completed in 1989 by Ursula Pürrer is an Austrian video art Queer Classic. On a visual level The Drift of Juicy shows an installative succession of split-screens and miniature landscapes, intensely colourful structures and grids, connections and separations on a small-scale and a large one. In her work Pürrer also reveals its handmade quality, its fabrication, and deconstructs video-specific polarities such as abstraction or real depiction. Both the realworld and the world of structure are exposed to a great deal of vibration and interference. The soundtrack is heightened by the vigorous hammering of construction site and engine noises that clearly suggest acts of physical labour.
*THE CROSSCONNECTION BETWEEN HERE AND THERE*
*SEARCHING * SPACE * NEXT*
Verbal inserts run in majuscules over the screen-in-progress, along which everything might run on tracks but it is permanently being replaced. The vehicle is a truck. Heavy duty. Suddenly the filmmaker enters the image as her own avatar and doppelganger in a lemon-yellow and a vermillion fetish-style outfit ? interacting, for instance, with herself in a kind of sexual gymnastics. Her body is painted like a model with a non-permanent tattoo while commenting on, viewing and observing the proceedings at the same time. "It's tricky to be both", we are told by Pürrer's voice-over. What is shown are the NEW IMAGES of late-1980s media art ? interlocking images, animation film logic, flying shifts of level. The space defined in the video has been duplicated and gained in complexity, been updated ? as has the localisation of identity. Logically, the entire video sequence ends with one word: NOW.
