TIK TAK TALK   Austria   1998

Carla DEGENHARDT

In her video TIK TAK TALK Carla Degenhart plays a video artist who is a guest in an imaginary talk show, and although it seems that she is corresponding with famous talk show hosts, she is always on her own sofa and in her own living room. Zap. In every show we experience Vera, Ilona, Sonja, Brite, Susi. in an
almost unbearable speed: through their statements and phrases, which vary from sporty-optimistic to fatal mourning, they release with their professional popular rating chatter, the misery of the viewer for the viewer.

The talk show guest alias Carla Degenhart remains a composed artist. She dedicates herself to the most important things in life: she speaks of the remote control?s soul, the unintentional push of the button, which brought the whole world to her heart, and through the possibilities of a video recorder making a
lifetime out of a minute; while the cameraman Franzobel tries, through the use of close-up recordings and dwelling persistently on her socks, to force her into exposing/ uncovering her publicly.

Despite socks and intimacy, the artist fulfills all clicheés of an artist with contrasting meta-level chitchat, the same as any other eccentric who is pulled in front of the lights and TV cameras, even while she is unveiling secrets to the talk master during her performance. "The same thing is happening me as it is to the others, everyone is pretending to be making something, but no one will look at it anyway." "Something has to happen, all cells that can regenerate die off through Art." Criticism directed at the Art market, on ones own production, and the realization that this is not meant for millions in the general public. This is accompanied by music and the voice of the talk show host speaking comforting words: "Look into yourself, what is missing, if you perhaps need rest, if you need light, if you need affection. I do not know, but I truly
wish, that you will find it." (Suess)
