Base Mix   Austria   1998

Moira ZOITL

"Base mix" is a documentary discussion between Moira Zoitl and her mother, the artist Gloria Zoitl, exploring specific positions of a woman and the relation of her life and work, from the perspective of a mother/ daughter relationship where both are artists.

The discussion takes place in a 70´s ambient. It is not clear if the shown scenery is the authentic everyday context of the daughter, or if this is used as a symbol of the past. Black and white scenes of the mother´s daily life, which are interspersed, betray a glimpse of her present situation: flower pots, books, old furniture in a house in the countryside. The discussion, although led very objectively, disconcerts. It becomes all the more clear that everything could be very different when the woman discusses her life as a series of conscious decisions.

"Base mix" provides links in the exhibition "After 68. Demands and Desires": fragments of interviews with artists of the same generation as her mother (born around 1945) are taken out of newspapers - e.g. Valie Export, Carolee Schneemann or Rosenbach - private, individual events combined with social and historical trends and statements.
